Application of Diamond Detector in Large Hadron Collision Accelerator

The Russian Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) has recently participated in the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collision Accelerator (LHC) of the European Center for Atomic Energy Research (CERN). TPU scientists use synthetic diamonds to build the next generation of stable detectors that record the collision of accelerated elementary particles close to the speed of light.

Pavel Karataev, professor of the Royal Holloway Academy and head of the TPU team at CERN, said that the energy generated by LHC in the work experiment is huge, and it is also the world's largest energy. The experimental environment is also extraordinary. The collision of elementary particles is every It happens once every 28 nanoseconds. Therefore, a stable and accurate detector is needed to respond quickly to these collisions.
The TPU team is responsible for the beam radiation instrumentation and brightness (BRIL) project of CMS experiments in CERN. The work content is mainly brightness measurement, MIB and wave number timing. The BRIL framework aims to improve the stability and reliability of the BCML (beam radiation condition monitoring) diamond detector system in the LHC.

Pavel Karataev introduced that in order to continue the LHC test, the proton beam intensity is increased by 10 orders of magnitude; if the sensor is not sufficient to carry such a large load, the particle collision cannot be recorded and the beam brightness measured.
Currently, researchers use different voltage and radiation loads to illuminate these diamond detectors for two months and to determine the operating voltage of each detector; predict wear rate, average life and other parameters. ( Compile: China Superhard Materials Network )
