On March 7, the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province announced that in 2012, the Sichuan Cotton Crops Team made significant progress in ramie research. They successfully collected over 600 ramie germplasm resources, achieving a high level of species diversity, specificity, and integrity, which placed them at the forefront of China's ramie research. As a result, they developed the first ramie variety specifically designed for feed processing—“Chuan Fei No. 1.â€
This new variety demonstrated impressive performance in terms of yield. The fresh yield reached 8,494 kg per mu, representing a 30% increase compared to traditional ramie, a 44% improvement over pasture, and an astonishing 83% rise over silage corn. In addition, its protein content exceeded 20%, far surpassing that of corn and forage crops. This breakthrough filled a critical gap in China’s feed ramie varieties, playing a vital role in addressing the shortage of feed raw materials and boosting the development of the animal husbandry industry.
Another notable achievement was the release of “Chuanxi 13,†a new ramie variety developed by the company. It addressed key challenges faced by processing enterprises, meeting the requirement of hemp fiber content of at least 2,300 kg per mu, while also increasing production by more than 5%. Its excellent defoliation properties and easy skin separation made it highly favored by processing companies. In 2012, this variety was planted on 420,000 mu across the southwestern region, producing an additional 11 million kilograms of raw hemp and generating an added value of 66 million yuan.
These developments not only highlight the scientific and technological advancements in Sichuan’s agricultural sector but also demonstrate the growing importance of ramie as a versatile crop with wide-ranging applications, from animal feed to industrial fibers.
