Due to the excessive rainfall this year, early defoliation of apple trees has become a serious issue in Qianyang County. This condition, primarily caused by apple leaf diseases, not only affects the yield and quality of the current harvest but also impacts flower bud formation and can lead to secondary flowering, resulting in smaller fruits. According to recent investigations by the Plant Protection Station in Qianyang County, the disease incidence rate in key apple villages reached 63%, with a diseased plant rate of 34% and a leaf infection rate of 13.6%. The problem has emerged earlier than usual and is more severe, as autumn rainfall continues to increase. To address this issue, it's essential to implement effective measures promptly. First, it's important to clean up and remove infected leaves, burning or burying them to reduce the source of the disease. Second, proper orchard management should be prioritized, including the application of organic and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to strengthen tree health and improve resistance. Pruning should be done to remove dense, weak, or competing branches, allowing better air circulation and light penetration within the canopy. Techniques such as bending, lifting, twisting, and hanging branches can help adjust their angles and orientation, further improving ventilation and reducing disease occurrence. Third, chemical control is crucial. Spraying should be done before and after rain. For yellow varieties, a 1:3:200 dilution of Bordeaux mixture is recommended, while red varieties should use 80% mancozeb WP at 600–800 times dilution or 68.75% Enoxyfen at 1200 times. In cases of severe leaf spot, 50% iprodione WP at 1000–1500 times, 10% polyoxin WP at 1000–1500 times, or 4% Agricultural Anti-120 water agent at 600 times combined with 2% bacterial agent at 600–800 times can be applied. To prevent the solution from being washed away by rain, add 3000 times "650L" spreader or 0.1% detergent to the mixture, increasing its viscosity and enhancing effectiveness. By taking these proactive steps, farmers can significantly reduce the impact of early defoliation and ensure healthier, more productive apple trees for future seasons. It's vital to monitor the situation closely and adjust practices as needed based on weather conditions and disease progression.
