Marble grinding and polishing is the final stage in stone care, specifically for crystal surface treatment or the last step in processing light stone panels. It plays a crucial role in modern stone maintenance and differs significantly from traditional cleaning and waxing methods used by cleaning companies. The key difference lies in the nature of the process. Marble grinding and polishing involves using mechanical grinding discs with high-speed rotation and frictional heat, combined with water and chemical agents to create a new, ultra-bright crystalline layer on the stone's surface. This layer, about 1-2 mm thick, enhances the stone’s luster, achieving a shine of up to 90-100 degrees. Unlike traditional waxing, this process integrates chemically with the stone surface, forming a durable and long-lasting finish. On the other hand, marble cleaning and waxing, once popular in the 1980s and 1990s, now has limited relevance. It typically involves applying a thin layer of acrylic resin or PE emulsion onto the stone surface, similar to floor wax. This coating can be easily removed with a blade and does not chemically bond with the stone. As a result, it lacks durability and may lead to discoloration, oxidation, and reduced stone quality over time. Another major distinction is the effect on the stone’s structure. Crystal face treatment through grinding and polishing creates a strong, integrated surface layer that remains bonded with the stone beneath, allowing it to breathe and resist damage. In contrast, waxing seals the stone completely, preventing air and moisture from passing through, which can cause internal damage and shorten the stone’s lifespan. In terms of performance, polished marble exhibits high gloss, clarity, and resistance to scratches and wear. It maintains its natural beauty and functionality over time. However, waxed surfaces tend to appear dull, lack clarity, and are more prone to staining, scratching, and yellowing, diminishing the stone’s true value. Maintenance after crystal face treatment is also more efficient. The treated surface allows for easy cleaning and re-polishing without the need for harsh chemicals. It can be maintained locally and at any time, without causing color inconsistencies. In contrast, waxed stones require frequent reapplication and professional maintenance to maintain their appearance. Overall, marble grinding and polishing represents an advanced, long-term solution for preserving and enhancing the beauty of natural stone, while traditional waxing is a temporary fix that often leads to more problems down the line.
