What if the medicinal damage occurs in the orchard?

Phytotoxicity refers to the condition where crops fail to grow properly or experience physiological dysfunction after exposure to certain substances, often due to pesticide application. This condition can be either acute or chronic. Acute phytotoxicity typically manifests within a few hours to 3-4 days after spraying, showing visible symptoms such as leaf burns, wilting, defoliation, flower drop, and fruit loss. On the other hand, chronic phytotoxicity may develop over time, leading to issues like stunted growth, leaf deformities, delayed maturity, and reduced yield. Common signs of phytotoxicity include irregular spots on leaves, discoloration, tissue scorching, leaf holes, detachment, yellowing, chlorosis, or thickening of foliage. When a fruit farmer notices these symptoms in their orchard, it's crucial to take immediate action to mitigate the damage and help the trees recover. Here are some effective methods to address phytotoxicity: 1. **Water Rinse**: If the issue is detected early, immediately spray water onto the affected plants. This helps dilute and wash away the pesticides clinging to the leaves and branches, reducing the concentration of harmful chemicals in the tree. 2. **Neutralization Treatment**: For leaf damage, apply a solution of 50% humic acid diluted in water to create a 3000-fold solution. This can help restore leaf color within 3-5 days. If the phytotoxicity is caused by copper sulfate in Bordeaux mixture, spraying a 0.5–1% lime solution can neutralize the effects. For excessive sulfur compounds from the stone sulfur mixture, after rinsing with water, spray a 500-fold rice vinegar solution. 3. **Fertilization**: After the fruit trees have been affected, timely topdressing is essential. Apply grass ash or lime if the damage was caused by acidic pesticides, and use a 1% bleaching powder solution for foliar application. For alkaline pesticide damage, consider using acid-based fertilizers like ammonium sulfate. Regardless of the cause, applying a mixture of 0.3% urea and 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate every 15–17 days, up to two or three times, can help reduce the toxic effects. 4. **Soil Cultivation**: Loosen the soil around the trees (to a depth of 10–15 cm) to improve aeration and promote root development. This enhances the tree’s ability to recover and absorb nutrients more effectively. 5. **Pruning**: Trim the affected areas carefully, removing dead branches and leaves. This prevents the spread of damage and reduces the risk of secondary infections. 6. **Care and Patience**: Phytotoxicity recovery takes time, so patience and consistent care are essential. With proper treatment and attention, most fruit trees can bounce back and continue to thrive. By taking these steps, farmers can minimize the impact of phytotoxicity and support the long-term health of their orchards.
