With the approval of the US Federal Communications Commission, Ossia has taken a step forward in replacing today's wireless charging system with a fully wireless radio wave charging system. The content approved on Thursday has some additional notes: it is only suitable for commercial and industrial environments, and the wireless charging distance can be up to 1 meter.

Ossia's Cota wireless charging beam is powered over the air on the same 2.4GHz radio frequency used by Wi-Fi networks. However, instead of sending data, radio waves charge devices equipped with appropriate receivers-for example, the Spigen Forever Sleeve phone case.

Today's wireless charging requires you to put your phone on the charging pad. Ossia's wireless charging technology and competitors' wireless charging technology such as Energous can work over longer distances. Ossia hopes that in some cases, its technology will directly power the device, so no battery is needed at all.

The technology can also help gadgets such as Internet of Things (IOT) sensors. In fact, FCC certification covers these uses, although its current certification can only provide about 1 watt of power. This is lower than that provided by a typical mobile phone charger, but at least keeps the battery of the charging device fully charged.

Although the restrictions of the Federal Communications Commission are very important, Ossia said that the agency ’s approval is also a step to introduce technology to consumers, but it takes longer than expected. In 2017, Ossia's goal is to launch consumer products in 2018. Now it says commercial products should be launched in 2020.
