Laser technology has become a key enabler in the welding of plastic components, where light energy is transformed into thermal energy within the welding zone. Supported by the European Union’s Seventh Research and Development Framework Program (FP7), the project is managed by the Fraunhofer Association from Germany. The POLYBRIGHT R&D team, consisting of research institutions and industrial partners across multiple EU countries, has made significant progress in developing an innovative high-brightness laser system combined with advanced beam shaping techniques. These technologies allow for the efficient and high-quality welding of complex plastic geometries, offering great potential for future applications. The key innovations of the new laser welding technology developed by the team include: 1) The creation of two optimized 120-watt mid-infrared laser sources, operating at pulse wavelengths of 1567 nm and 1940 nm, which are specifically tailored for better absorption by plastic materials. 2) The development of a novel beam shaping component that integrates diffractive and refractive optical elements (DOE and ROE) to generate a more uniform and effective M-shaped laser beam profile. 3) An advanced computer chip-based control module that optimizes the heat distribution during the irradiation process, improving both the aesthetic quality and structural robustness of the welded parts. 4) A pioneering approach using infrared laser wavelengths that align with the absorption characteristics of various polymer materials, enhancing the overall efficiency and performance of the welding process.
