Japanese scientists develop energy-saving semiconductor materials

Nagoya University professor Yashiro Amano used blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to successfully develop energy-saving semiconductor materials that he won for the Nobel Prize. At present, we have found ways to apply this material to home appliances such as air conditioners. Professor Amano also collaborated with private companies such as Toyota Motor Corporation and Denso to strive to reduce costs and put it into practical use within two years.

According to the report, in 2014, Professor Amano received the Nobel Prize in Physics with Dr. Akazaki Akira of Meijo University and Dr. Shuji Nakamura of the University of California. Amano's research results - blue LEDs made from GaN are also widely praised. This time, he also used GaN as a raw material to develop a "power semiconductor" that can manipulate power.

According to the report, the researchers produced a small piece of semiconductor about 1 mm square, which can stably transmit the 10 amps of current needed during the use of household appliances. If it is used in servers that store large amounts of data, or in air conditioners and other appliances, it will save nearly 10% of the power consumption.

It is reported that gallium nitride is originally prone to defects during processing into semiconductors, which generates heat and causes material degradation. Professors such as Professor Amano and others improved the durability of the material, and even if there were defects, it would be difficult to cause the material to deteriorate. After finding a solution to the durability problem, the new material has reached the commercial level. Through cooperation with private companies, it is expected that the cost will drop to 1% after two years.

According to the report, it is reported that once the manufacturing cost is reduced to less than one percent, the new product is expected to replace the existing power semiconductors made of silicon and silicon carbide.

Reported that power semiconductor materials can not only be used for home appliances, but also in the research and development of highly competitive electric vehicles are also highly anticipated. Professor Amano’s goal is to further promote the application of the new materials developed in the electric vehicle in the future.

According to the report, the research project was initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Science, and was promoted jointly by Toyota and about 40 companies. Companies and universities have brought their own experimental data and have overcome problems in practicality. Originally, the high-current problems that hindered the use of GaN semiconductor components in household electrical appliances have also been solved, and technical problems have been completely eliminated.

Many countries including Japan are eager to research semiconductor technology. The picture shows a silicon substrate LED chip. Xinhua News Agency

Zinc Phosphate is a new type of nontoxic and harmless white antirust pigment with excellent performance in rust prevention and ideal application effect. It is the best substitute of conventional antirust pigments containing heavy metals such as lead and chrome.
