Scientists have recently developed a new material made up of collapsible cubes that can be programmed to change its shape, size and hardness. Maybe it was a flat sheet at this moment, and it became bulging in the next second.
In the process of developing this "super material", engineers used a modern version of Japanese origami called snapology. This technology, also known as cell origami, or module origami, requires multiple identical components to be made and then combined into one larger model.
In this super material developed by Harvard engineers, each module contains six open cubes that are connected to each other. The final assembly results present a three-dimensional cross structure.
According to the researcher of the material, with this material, we may be able to create a new portable building that can be pushed down at any time and can be pulled up at any time.
As the material changes shape, the hardness changes, and people can make it stronger by changing the shape of the building when building the building.
The material can also be used to make retractable roofs or walls that can change shape as needed.
The researchers combined these cubes into a large 3D structure to successfully develop a new building material with many interesting properties.
The built-in pneumatic actuator allows the cubes to be folded along one or more sides, changing the entire structure.
“We designed a 3D thin-walled structure that can be used to make a foldable, program-redesignable building,” said Johannes Overvelde, the first author of the paper. “We can change and control its shape, volume and hardness at any time.”
The researchers combined 64 individual units into a 4x4x4 structure, which can be bulky and small, can change shape, and suddenly become a flat sheet.
As the shape changes, the hardness of the material also changes. According to the researchers, this adds another dimension to the material beyond its length, width and height. This means that it can be used to make a unique material that is easily deformed when it is in one shape and hard when it is in another shape.
Professor Katia Bertoldio said: "We not only understand the principle of deformation of this material, but also make practical use of it. We know what to do to get the shape we want."
“This is a new, foldable material that can be easily resized,” Mr. Ovo Verde pointed out. “This material can be used on both microscopic and macroscopic scales. From surgical stents to disaster relief shacks, it can be awesome.”
In addition, the material can be used to make "dynamic buildings" or vehicles that can change shape. This kind of vehicle can stretch when it is galloping, which is more aerodynamic; but it will be shortened after the destination, so it is convenient to park in the city.
