At the "World Floor Conference: Low Carbon Economy and Global Opportunities" on March 23, Li Yunkun, Deputy Director of the Department of Afforestation and Forestry at the State Forestry Administration, emphasized the need to change the common perception that wood use is harmful to the environment. In an exclusive interview with International Finance News, he pointed out that many misconceptions still exist regarding the role of wood in sustainable development. "Wood is unique among materials because it is the only one that is both renewable and recyclable," Li explained. He highlighted that the production of wood actually helps absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making it a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. The more wood we produce, the more carbon we can capture, which supports a low-carbon future. "In addition, the environmental impact of harvesting wood is localized and recoverable. Compared to extracting metals or other non-renewable resources, the ecological damage caused by timber harvesting is far less," Li added. He also noted that wood doesn’t require smelting like metal, which is highly polluting. Its lower hardness and density make it easier and cheaper to transport, even using waterways with minimal energy consumption. Li believes that promoting the use of wood flooring can help encourage afforestation and reduce atmospheric CO₂. He explained that when trees are harvested at the right time, they continue to play a role in the carbon cycle—when they die, decay, or burn, they release the carbon they absorbed during their growth back into the atmosphere. This makes responsible forest management essential for maintaining ecological balance. Zeng Chunjun, Executive Director of the China Forestry Property Exchange, agrees that promoting the use of wood requires institutional support. He suggested that forestry property rights transactions could be a key driver for this shift. "Reforming forest tenure not only accelerates the transition to a low-carbon economy but also has broader implications for rural development and improving people’s livelihoods," Zeng said. He added that when companies get involved in forest rights trading, it brings in more capital and encourages better environmental protection through increased investment in forestry. Zeng also mentioned that while the current transaction volume at the China Forestry Property Exchange is still low, the government's push for forestry reforms is expected to significantly boost activity in the sector. With proper policies and market mechanisms, the potential for sustainable wood use and environmental conservation remains strong.
