At the "World Floor Conference: Low Carbon Economy and Global Opportunities" on March 23, Li Yunkun, Deputy Director of the Department of Afforestation and Forestry at the State Forestry Administration, emphasized the need to change the perception that wood usage harms the environment. In an exclusive interview with International Finance News, he pointed out that there are many misconceptions surrounding the use of wood.

"Wood is unique in that it is the only renewable and recyclable material available globally," Li explained. "The production of wood actually helps absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The more wood we produce, the more carbon we can capture, making it a powerful tool in the fight against climate change."

He also highlighted that the environmental impact of harvesting wood is localized and recoverable, making it far less damaging than extracting other materials like metals or non-metals. Unlike metal, which requires energy-intensive smelting processes that harm the environment, wood is naturally sustainable and easy to process.

"Compared to conventional materials such as glass, wood has significantly lower hardness and density, meaning transportation costs and energy consumption are much lower. In fact, water transport for wood can be almost energy-free," Li added.

Li believes that promoting the use of wood flooring can encourage afforestation and help absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When trees reach maturity, they should be harvested responsibly, as when they die, decay, or burn, they release the carbon they once absorbed back into the air.

Zeng Chunjun, Executive Director of the China Forestry Property Exchange, supports this view and suggests that forestry property rights transactions can play a key role in expanding the use of wood. "Promoting forest tenure reform not only accelerates the development of a low-carbon economy but also brings significant benefits to rural areas and farmers," he said. "It can reshape agricultural structures and attract more investment through enterprise involvement, ultimately supporting better environmental protection."

Zeng also noted that while the current transaction volume at the China Forestry Property Exchange is still small, it is expected to grow substantially with continued government support for forestry reforms.
