**Abstract** Introduction: "In advanced technology, we are still in the following stage." China's CNC machine tools continue to face a developmental gap in terms of speed and precision. When comparing machines with similar specifications, foreign equipment operates approximately three times faster than domestic models, and their accuracy is nearly an order of magnitude higher. The domestic CNC system also lags significantly behind global leaders in high-speed processing, high-precision control, five-axis machining, and intelligent functionalities. Compared to a decade ago, China has made remarkable progress in the CNC machine tool industry. In the past, the country was unable to produce five-axis联动 (five-axis linkage) machines, but today, several domestic brands have emerged. This advancement has forced Japanese manufacturers to lower their prices for similar products. Additionally, other heavy-duty machine tools have reached international standards, and the development of five-axis CNC machines has become a symbol of China’s technological growth. In recent years, significant improvements in machine tool performance have enabled breakthroughs in key manufacturing sectors. However, some critical high-end CNC equipment remains out of reach in terms of production technology, which limits China’s capabilities in vital industries such as large aircraft manufacturing and integrated circuit production. Therefore, achieving comprehensive development in the manufacturing sector still hinges on overcoming the challenges of high-end CNC equipment. "In advanced technology, we are still in the follow-up phase." China's CNC machine tools still exhibit a phase difference in speed and precision. For products of the same specifications, foreign machine tools operate about three times faster than domestic ones, and their accuracy is nearly an order of magnitude better. CNC machine tools represent one of the most complex industrial systems. The technical bottlenecks in domestic machine tools cannot be attributed to a single factor. Generally, CNC machines consist of a digital control system and the machine itself. China faces gaps in both areas. On one hand, high-performance CNC systems are crucial in determining the overall performance and cost of the machine. At this year's Nanjing Exhibition, all high-end CNC machines displayed were equipped with foreign systems like Siemens or Fanuc. Domestically developed CNC systems still lag far behind in high-speed, high-precision, five-axis machining, and intelligent functions. This is due to the comprehensive gap in the architecture of the CNC system—such as the hardware platform, software platform, and fieldbus—as well as in high-speed and high-precision control algorithms and servo drives. On the other hand, functional components such as electric spindles, dual-rotating heads, turntables, nano-precision gratings, and the core technologies involved in the design and manufacture of the entire machine are also major constraints in the production of high-end CNC equipment in China. The overall improvement of CNC machine tools in China ultimately depends on the support from an advanced functional components industry. The vast domestic market demand serves as a strong driver for technological innovation. It is expected that by 2020, there will be a significant demand for high-end CNC machines across various manufacturing fields. This growing need presents both a challenge and an opportunity for China to further advance its position in the global manufacturing landscape.
