After corn plants experience lodging, they generally do not require additional support. These plants have a strong self-regulating ability and will naturally grow upright as they mature. However, for severe cases where the ground is slightly dry after rain, manual intervention is recommended. It’s best to work in pairs: one person gently lifts the plant from the top, while the other cultivates the soil around the base to help it recover. If any stems are broken, those plants should be removed from the field immediately to prevent decay and potential damage to healthy plants.
Timely fertilization is crucial after lodging. Corn that has been laid down often experiences reduced photosynthesis and disrupted physiological functions, which can hinder its growth. For fields that have only received one round of top dressing, applying another round can be beneficial. If the first application did not include phosphorus and potassium, these nutrients should be the focus this time. If phosphorus and potassium were already applied, then urea should be used in combination with the peak growth stage, at a rate of 15–20 kg per acre to boost yield.
Pest and disease control is also important following lodging. Diseases tend to spread more easily in such conditions, so close monitoring is essential. For leaf diseases, effective treatments include spraying with 70% thiophanate methyl diluted 800 times, or 500 times, or using 50% carbendazim, or chlorothalonil at 75% concentration. Spraying should be done every 7 to 10 days, and may need to be repeated 2 to 3 times depending on the severity.
Some farmers have asked whether other crops could be planted instead of saving the corn. This is not advisable. Before concluding that the corn is beyond recovery, efforts should be made to restore it. Giving up too soon can lead to unnecessary losses. Active measures should always be taken to salvage the crop. (Wang Daoping)
