Recently, the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Hydrogenation to Methanol Research Center of the Institute of Catalysis and New Materials, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Petroleum Co., Ltd. has achieved staged results: The pilot skid block unit was successfully started in the PetroChina Daqing Chemical Research Center for one trip CO2 conversion rate can reach 20%, methanol selectivity can reach 70% (methanol purity> 99.9% in organic liquid phase products), and stable operation has been achieved. The pilot test also completed the verification of small test rules, inspection of amplification effects, optimization of process conditions, and basic data collection. In addition, the technological process package development of the 10,000-ton device is also carried out simultaneously on this basis.

The use of nuclear energy or renewable energy to produce hydrogen by electrolysis of water and chemical reaction with the captured CO2 to synthesize methanol can achieve the conversion and storage of electrical energy to chemical energy. The research team developed a new type of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol catalyst based on previous research. On this basis, the CO2 hydrogenation process is completely designed as an independent chemical unit, and a full-flow skid-type CO2 hydrogenation device is built, which can be flexibly applied to distributed energy networks. The successful start-up of this pilot plant is a forward-looking exploration and attempt by Dalian Chemical Institute and PetroChina for the development trend of new energy in the future, and will provide technical demonstrations for CO2 resource utilization.
