In a bid to enhance traffic management and ensure the smooth operation of public transportation, Qingdao has introduced on-board electronic police systems on certain buses. Since their deployment, these systems have successfully captured 469 instances of illegal bus lane usage. The implementation has led to a noticeable improvement in bus speeds, particularly during peak hours, with an average increase of over 8 minutes.
To further reduce violations, the Qingdao Traffic Police Department is now installing fixed "electronic police" systems on major bus lanes, enabling 24/7 monitoring. These devices are already being used on key routes such as 316 Road and 31 Road, where they have captured 469 cases of illegal use in the past month—259 involving illegal parking and 210 related to road occupation.
According to data collected, most violations occur during peak hours, often due to vehicles illegally parking or working near bus stops. Weekends also see an increase in such behavior, likely due to drivers seeking convenience.
During peak times, bus speeds have improved significantly, with some routes like Shandong Road and Hong Kong Road seeing average speed increases of more than 8 minutes. A traffic officer from the South Traffic Police Brigade noted that while the situation has improved, illegal parking still occurs frequently between 7 AM and 9 PM, and again from 5 PM to 7 PM.
The introduction of on-board electronic police has already led to a significant drop in violations. However, some drivers still find ways to occupy bus lanes. To address this, the traffic police plan to install additional fixed "electronic police" units across 41 bus lanes in the city. These will be combined with existing on-board systems to expand coverage and enforce stricter penalties for traffic violations.
The fixed probes, equipped with high-definition cameras, can monitor up to 500 meters of road, capturing all illegal activities on bus lanes. Unlike mobile systems, they offer full coverage and continuous monitoring, ensuring that any vehicle entering a bus-only lane is recorded and penalized.
These installations are part of Qingdao’s broader smart traffic initiative, aimed at improving public transport efficiency and encouraging more people to use buses. By reducing traffic congestion and making bus travel faster and more reliable, the city hopes to ease pressure on its roads and promote sustainable urban mobility.
