As the Spring Festival approaches, we are entering a period when incidents of theft and fraud tend to increase. In this crucial time for public safety, reporters have spoken with police officers and security experts to gain insights into how to protect ourselves.
First, we focused on home security. To understand new burglary techniques, the reporter interviewed Mr. Zhang Hongjun, a senior researcher at the China Unlocking Technology R&D Center and a technical consultant for China Locksmith magazine.
**Strengthen Equipment and Awareness**
"Do you use a 'security door' for a long time?" Zhang Hongjun asked everyone. He explained that some housing companies, in an effort to cut costs during construction, install low-quality doors, which are more like "engineering doors." These doors should be replaced after renovation. He demonstrated how a screwdriver could accidentally damage the metal panel of a security door, making it vulnerable to forced entry. Zhang suggested that homeowners should invest in high-quality security doors that are designed to resist tools like crowbars and chisels.
In addition, he emphasized the importance of the door lock. "Do you guess the price of the cheapest lock cylinder?" Zhang asked. His answer was 9 yuan. Some manufacturers reduce the copper content in their locks, using iron, aluminum, or even plastic, making them ineffective. Even the best locks can be compromised if not used properly. Zhang stressed that while equipment is important, awareness is even more critical.
**Beware of New Burglary Methods**
Zhang also warned about modern theft techniques. Some people habitually carry keys around their waists or leave them on tables in public places. With mobile phones now having cameras, thieves can easily take photos of keys without the owner's knowledge. Zhang mentioned that criminals can pay up to 200 yuan for a key, allowing them to enter homes freely. In the past, some thieves even made keys by observing the teeth of a target’s key. Experts advise against carrying keys openly and recommend using a key case instead.
Zhang shared a video showing how a security door was opened in just 1 minute and 20 seconds using violent methods. He explained that the problem lies in the thin lock cover, which doesn’t protect the internal lock mechanism. Replacing the cover with a tamper-proof one can help prevent such attacks.
**Stay Alert and Prevent Loopholes**
Over the past year, Zhang has studied many burglary cases. For example, thieves have used luxury cars to hide in communities, modified gas tanks to store stolen goods, and posed as workers to gain access. Some rent houses as bases to observe residents’ routines before striking. This highlights the need for community security to be vigilant, check visitors, and properly register all residents, including renters.
Thieves often stage multiple steps before targeting a home. Leaflets left on doors may serve as markers. Once they see the same leaflet repeatedly, they assume the house is empty and proceed with the theft. Travelers planning to go away for the New Year should ask neighbors or relatives to regularly remove mail from their doorstep.
Window and balcony security is essential, but so is vigilance. Zhang encouraged people to build good relationships with neighbors. If someone spots a suspicious person in the hallway, asking questions can sometimes scare off potential thieves. Being alert and proactive is the best defense.
