Solid wood furniture refers to pieces crafted entirely from natural wood, where the grain and texture of the wood are visible on the surface. On the market today, there are generally two categories: fully solid wood furniture, which is made entirely from real wood, and imitation or engineered solid wood furniture, which mimics the look, feel, and color of real wood but is often a combination of solid wood and artificial materials like particleboard or MDF.
It's quite common for a single piece of furniture to use multiple types of wood. For example, in an ordinary wardrobe, the panel and back panel might be made from different woods, while the side and bottom panels could also vary. It’s not unusual for a wardrobe to incorporate six or seven different wood types. Some manufacturers label furniture as "solid wood" even if only 30% of the materials are solid wood. This can lead to misleading marketing, such as calling a cabinet or wardrobe "solid wood" simply because the doors are made of solid wood. Even small components like table legs or armrests may be labeled as solid wood, significantly inflating the price despite the majority being made of synthetic materials.
Currently, there are two main types of "solid wood furniture" available: 100% solid wood furniture, and "standard solid wood furniture," which contains approximately 60% solid wood and 40% composite or artificial materials. These products are often marketed with names like "pure solid wood," "natural wood," "eco-friendly solid wood," or "logs," making it difficult for consumers to distinguish between genuine and imitation products. Some unscrupulous sellers actively obscure the truth, expanding the definition of "solid wood" without informing customers, thereby violating their right to know about quality and pricing.
Consumers are advised to purchase fully solid wood furniture that does not contain any wood-based panels. When buying, they should confirm with the sales representative and clearly state "100% solid wood" in the contract to avoid misunderstandings.
As of May 1, 2009, a new national standard was implemented, defining "solid wood furniture" as furniture where more than 70% of the components are made from solid wood. This helped eliminate confusion and reduce misleading labeling. Before this, the definition was vague, allowing many businesses to falsely claim their products were solid wood. The new standard clarified terms like "all solid wood," "solid wood furniture," and "solid wood veneer furniture," ensuring greater transparency.
According to the mandatory standard GB5296.6-2004, all furniture sold must come with usage instructions that accurately reflect the product's true attributes and comply with national or industry standards. These instructions should detail the materials used, including information on toxic substances and radioactivity, as well as paint and other finishes.
If a seller cannot provide clear usage instructions, consumers should request that the type and location of the wood used in the furniture be specified in the sales contract. When customizing furniture, it's essential to include details such as design style, material specifications, and hardware quality in the agreement. Before signing, it's wise to research the product or bring along someone knowledgeable to ensure informed decision-making and better protection of legal rights in case of future issues.
