Solid wood furniture refers to pieces crafted entirely from natural wood, where the grain and texture of the wood are visible on the surface. There are generally two types of solid wood furniture available in the market today: pure solid wood furniture, which is made entirely from solid wood, and imitation solid wood furniture, which mimics the look, feel, and color of real wood but is actually a combination of solid wood and artificial boards. It's quite common for a single piece of furniture to use multiple types of wood. For example, an ordinary wardrobe might have different materials for the panels, back, sides, and bottom. It’s not unusual for a wardrobe to use six or seven different types of wood. Some manufacturers label products as "solid wood furniture" if the solid wood content exceeds 30%, even if the majority of the structure is made from other materials. This can be misleading, as only parts like the doors or legs may be solid wood, while the rest is made from particleboard or MDF. These practices often result in significantly higher prices compared to the actual cost of production. Currently, there are two main categories of "solid wood furniture" on the market: 100% solid wood furniture and "standard solid wood furniture," which typically contains around 60% solid wood and 40% artificial materials. Some businesses use terms like "pure solid wood," "raw wood," or "eco-friendly solid wood" to attract customers, even though these terms aren't officially recognized by national standards. Consumers should be cautious, as some sellers deliberately obscure the true composition of their products, violating the right to informed choice. To protect themselves, consumers are advised to purchase fully solid wood furniture that doesn’t include any wood-based panel materials. When shopping, it's important to confirm with sales representatives and ensure that the contract clearly states "100% solid wood." Since May 1, 2009, China implemented a new national standard for wooden furniture, which requires at least 70% of the components to be solid wood in order to be classified as "solid wood furniture." This helps eliminate confusion and ensures more accurate labeling. According to the mandatory standard GB5296.6-2004, all furniture sold must come with usage instructions that accurately reflect the product’s attributes and meet relevant national or industry standards. These instructions should also detail the safety requirements, such as toxic substance levels and radioactivity from materials and finishes used. If a seller cannot provide proper usage instructions, consumers should ask them to specify the type and location of the wood used in the furniture within the sales contract. It's highly recommended to sign a detailed contract when customizing furniture, including specifications about the wood material, hardware quality, and design details. Before signing, it's wise to research the product or bring someone knowledgeable along to help make an informed decision. This way, if any quality issues arise later, consumers will be better equipped to protect their legal rights.
