With the rise of the new generation of consumers, personalized demand has become the norm in the market. Customized furniture has gained popularity because it caters to the desire of young and middle-aged individuals who value self-expression and individuality. Beyond traditional customizations like wardrobes, cabinets, and bathroom fixtures, advanced customization is now also emerging in flooring, tiles, doors, and windows. [Image: Sunshine Fubai Nian Modern Pine Dining Table and Chairs] The combination of strong market demand and the need for foreign currency earnings has driven the rapid growth of modern furniture production in China. Many manufacturers have successfully exported their products to Europe and the U.S., positioning China as a key player in the global furniture industry. However, despite high output, the industry still faces challenges with low added value. Most exports are produced through OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing), meaning that few Chinese brands directly sell to international markets. Currently, most domestic furniture companies rely on similar designs, lacking originality and creativity. In the world of international home design, there's still no prominent Chinese brand featured in major exhibitions like the Milan Furniture Fair. This highlights the long road ahead for Chinese home design to gain global recognition. Although some Chinese designers have started focusing on original design in recent years, compared to the 52-year history of the Milan International Furniture Fair, Chinese furniture design is still in its early stages. Chen Baoguang, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Furniture Association, pointed out that the furniture industry has grown significantly. Facing intense competition, the domestic market often sees price wars, and relying solely on low-cost advantages in foreign markets is becoming increasingly difficult. The key to the industry’s future lies in design, and the integration of high-quality design talent into manufacturing companies is essential for sustainable growth. Unfortunately, the reality is that China lacks enough furniture designers. According to incomplete data, there are over 30,000 furniture companies in China, but fewer than 3,000 professional designers—meaning only one designer for every ten companies. This shortage has slowed down the development of specialized furniture in China. Even among the few available designers, there is a wide variation in skill levels. Many are more like "drafters" who can only copy or sketch, rather than create innovative designs. Overall, the industry lacks a solid talent structure and experienced professionals. To address the shortage of local designers, many large furniture companies have begun hiring foreign experts at high salaries, leading to a situation where foreign designers are taking key roles. While these professionals often bring fresh ideas and innovation, they may not fully understand Chinese preferences or cultural nuances. As a result, many of their designs don't resonate well with the local market. For the industry to grow, the focus must shift toward cultivating local design talent. More and more companies are now recognizing the importance of design expertise. Educational institutions across China, especially in provinces like Guangdong and Zhejiang—major furniture manufacturing hubs—are increasingly offering training programs for furniture designers. Private training centers have also launched related courses to meet the growing demand. In the domestic interior design sector, the trend of copying and imitating is gradually changing. Today, Chinese designers are moving from imitation to independent creation, actively participating in industry development. Liu Hun, President of the China Interior Decoration Association, noted that the entire industry is beginning to place greater emphasis on product design—a sign of progress. Previously, companies focused mainly on selling products, but now they are seeking partnerships with designers and investing more in innovation.
