In March this year, sanitation workers in Xinghua District of Yinchuan City were issued new uniforms for those working on Beijing Road. However, the new attire has drawn criticism due to its dark colors, poor visibility, and lack of reflective properties, making it less effective in ensuring worker safety.
It’s only natural to expect that new uniforms would be an improvement over the old ones. Yet, in this case, the change seems to have gone in the wrong direction. Many cities opt for bright orange or yellow clothing for sanitation workers, as these colors are highly visible and help protect their safety. But even this color isn’t without its issues. During daylight hours, especially under direct sunlight, the bright color can be blinding to drivers, potentially causing distractions. Moreover, some sanitation workers have reported that the color attracts insects like bees, leading to painful stings and discomfort during their work.
The ideal uniform for sanitation workers is not a technical challenge; it's more about whether the necessary investment is made. A survey revealed that many incidents involving sanitation workers occur early in the morning, partly because the reflective strips on their uniforms are worn out and no longer visible. If they had multiple sets of uniforms, this issue could be easily avoided. While it may cost more upfront, it significantly enhances the safety of the workers.
Today, there is a growing trend of showing care and support for sanitation workers. Some areas have introduced rest stops for them, which is a positive development. However, more attention should also be given to the design and quality of their uniforms. Providing a few extra sets of high-visibility, safe clothing could make a big difference. Why should sanitation workers still be considered part of a "dangerous profession" when simple improvements could make their jobs safer?
