In March 2014, the chemical market experienced mixed trends as prices fluctuated across various sectors. According to a price survey conducted by business clubs, 41 chemical products were monitored, with 8 of them showing an increase of over 5%. The top performers included R22 (up 14.29%), acetic anhydride (up 13.73%), and glycine (up 11.11%). On the other hand, 69 products saw a decline, with 13 of them falling by more than 5%, including butadiene (-15.85%), melamine (-9.46%), and PX (-9.12%). Overall, the average monthly change in commodity prices was -0.76%. Meanwhile, Industrial and Commercial Information Technology Co., Ltd. reported that 22 products saw price increases in March, with three of them rising by more than 5%. These included R22 (14.29%), another unnamed product (8.76%), and epichlorohydrin (6.29%). In contrast, 43 products declined, with 9 of them dropping by over 5%, led by melamine (-9.46%), another unnamed product (-8.90%), and ammonium sulfate (-6.31%). The overall average for the month was -0.94%. Zhang Ming, a chemical industry analyst from the business community, noted that several industrial chains showed distinct movements during the month. For instance, the phosphorus chemical industry chain saw most products rise slightly, except for monoammonium and diammonium phosphate. However, the upstream materials like phosphorus ore and yellow phosphorus faced cost pressures due to higher electricity charges, which did not directly affect phosphate fertilizers. Meanwhile, glyphosate, a downstream product, benefited from strong domestic and U.S. agricultural demand, and is expected to continue rising in the second quarter. The fluorine chemical industry also showed upward momentum, with products like methylene chloride, refrigerants, and fluororesins all increasing. Market expectations suggest continued growth in April, with an industry conference on April 22 potentially shaping the sector's direction for the second quarter. In the case of the "three acids and two alkalis" segment, some products rose due to raw material costs, but downstream demand started to resist further gains. Caustic soda and soda ash are likely to continue their adjustment trend without a rebound in April. The polyurethane segment saw weak price increases for MDI and BDO, but market activity remained light, with low production rates among sponge manufacturers and weak purchasing intentions. Adipic acid, in particular, faced oversupply due to increased production from Shanxi Yangmei Fengxi’s new plant, leading to a short-term price decline. Fertilizer prices were affected by tight spot supply, especially for potassium, which saw limited production during the “Golden Week” holiday. This led to price increases. However, other fertilizers such as urea, monoammonium phosphate, and chlorine-based compounds struggled with weak domestic and export demand, making a recovery in April unlikely. The China Commodity Supply and Demand Index (BCI), released by Business Club, stood at -0.48 in March, a decrease of 1.56% compared to the previous month, indicating continued contraction in the manufacturing economy. Zhang Ming concluded that the market performance in March aligned with expectations. Despite a three-and-a-half-month decline, the market continued to fall, and the "Golden Week" holiday did not bring significant benefits. Spring demand was under pressure from over-supply, and while some products showed signs of stabilization in late March, the overall chemical market still needed at least two months to transition back to a more balanced state. He expects the decline to slow down in April, with a potential uptick in early May.
