Although 4G technology dynamic era has just arrived, but the development of 5G technology has become the focus of global ICT (information and communications technology) industry concern. In response, ZTE Corporation and Huawei Technologies, the two giants in the domestic telecommunications industry, have already taken precautions and deployed in advance in the 5G technology field. The 5G Innovation Center (5GIC) of the University of Surrey in the UK, together with Huawei and other key 5GIC members, recently announced the launch of the world’s first 5G communication technology test bed.

5G represents the fifth generation of mobile communications technology and is an extension of 4G. It is understood that in June of this year, ZTE Corporation first proposed the Pre5G technology between 4G and 5G in the industry. In response, ZTE’s chief technology officer introduced to Dr. Ying Ying: “pre5G has four characteristics. First, it is similar to 5G user experience. Second, it adopts key technologies of 5G. Third, it is based on 4G existing UE. Fourth, it is far. Far earlier than the 5G commercial time point, to have these characteristics at the same time requires a lot of research and innovation on technical details. Currently, ZTE has made outstanding progress in pre5G technology.

As the world's leading independent 5G technology research and verification agency, the progress of 5GIC innovation is increasingly attracting the attention of the mobile industry. The construction of 5G test beds is the most critical part of 5GIC work. After the 5GIC test bed is completed, it will be used for field testing and verification of key technologies for the fifth generation mobile communications infrastructure. The construction of a 5G test bed takes about one year and is divided into three phases. The first phase of construction is expected to be completed in April 2015 and will later be used to help 5GIC members and industry partners develop and test leading 5G technologies.

5G will support multiple data rates as never before. From low-speed services of kb/s class to 10Gb/s data services, it can be implemented in 5G networks, enabling mobile communication networks to surpass current human-to-human communication service and fully enter the Internet of Everything. field. This means that the 5G mobile communication network will be widely used in various Internet of Things applications including medical care, logistics, intelligent transportation, and smart cities.

Prof. Rahim Tafazolli, president of 5GIC, commented: “By joining hands with Huawei and other global communications industry leaders, 5GIC plays an irreplaceable role in the field of innovation in next-generation communications technologies. Through the world’s leading 5GIC test bed, researchers can demonstrate concept and verification. Interoperability of standards and test products At the same time, with the in-depth development of 5G technology, test beds will continue to be perfected and upgraded, and new applications and services emerging in the future will be deployed and tested on 5GIC test beds. Various facilities will be opened to global partners. To help SMEs verify their innovations in the 5G environment, we will introduce low-cost test bed services and help them to promote the validation results to the world."

It is reported that the first phase of the test bed will focus on building and verifying a clouded wireless access network in a UDN environment, showing users unprecedented network capacity. As the test bed continues to improve, various 5G alternative waveforms, including Sparse Code Division Multiple Access (SCMA), will be validated on the 5GIC test bed.

The test bed is expected to be completed in 2015. By then, it will provide 5G basic network coverage for the entire University of Surrey. The school’s 17,000 teachers, students and staff will have the privilege of leading global users to the future of network communications. The ultimate goal of 5GIC is to demonstrate 5G technology to the world by 2018.

In addition, Huawei also actively cooperates with European countries in the 5G field. At the end of June, Huawei was selected as the board of directors of the European 5G Infrastructure Association, which is preparing for the deployment of the next-generation communications network in Europe. On November 5, 5GIC teamed up with Huawei and other key members of 5GIC to announce the launch of the world's first 5G communication technology test bed.
