Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have developed a new type of ultra-thin, curved roof that produces solar energy. This design will allow NEST, one of the school life laboratory facilities, to generate more energy than it consumes.

It is understood that this curved roof is composed of several layers. The inner concrete slab serves as the foundation for heating and cooling coils and insulating materials, which are covered by more concrete concrete. Thin film photovoltaic cells for collecting solar energy are then installed outside the building. The prototype of the roof is about 7.5 meters high and the entire surface area is 160 square meters. It has now been dismantled and the same design will be carried out in the HiLo condominium next year, which is part of the NEST project.

Roofs with unique shapes are often constructed from non-reusable materials, such as specially made wood or ground foam. Instead, this project uses a mesh made of wire rope covered with a polymer textile that forms a form in which the concrete can adhere. This not only promotes unusual designs, but also greatly reduces the cost of the project in terms of materials.

The Block research team and the Swiss National Competence Center provided an algorithm for the project to ensure that the roof will reach the desired shape when the weight of the wet concrete is applied to the stencil. The concrete was sprayed onto the steel mesh through the technology developed specifically for this project.

Solar panels installed on the roof are nothing new, but in the past few years there have been various advanced technology versions. In addition to being very efficient, this new hardware is much cheaper than the previous version.

Solar power is a more and more viable way of energy production. More and more countries are investing in solar energy infrastructure on a large scale. Thanks to projects like HiLo Roof, ordinary individuals will have more solar power in their homes.
